there were 65 people at a conference after
3/4 of the men and
3/5 of women left the conference .there were and equal number of men and women .what was the number of women at first?

System:

m+w=65

m/4 = 2w/5

 

Solve. You get:

m = 40

w = 25

 

The hardest part is setting up the system. The first equation, m+w=65, is pretty easy. The second requires knowing that is 3/4 of men leave, then 1/4 remain. We set the remaining men equal to remaining women.

Your data is not presented in proper time sequence. I think that you mean that ORIGINALLY there were 65 people at a conference. Then if x & y represent the # of men & women (of that original 65), that 

3/4 of the men and
3/5 of women left the conference SO THAT THEN there remained equal numbers of men & women.

 

This means that x + y = 65

(1/4)x = (2/5)y    

 

Here you have a nice little system of 2 equations, 2 unknowns.  SOLVE!
