A negative decimal number is to the left of the zero on the number line, whereas a positive decimal is to the right of zero on the number line. All numbers furthest to the left of zero is less than numbers furthest to the right of zero.
If you take a negative decimal number minus a positive decimal number, the difference will be negative.
