Physics uniform motion word problem.

Question

Alan leaves Los Angeles at 8:00am to drive to San Fransisco , 400 miles away. He travels at a steady 50 mph. Beth leaves Los Angeles at 9:00am and drives a steady 60mph. Who gets to San Fransisco first ? How long does the first to arrive have to wait for the second? 

 

I rally have no idea how to solve this. What are the equations I need to know ? I would greatly appreciate detailed steps :)

400=50*t

400/50=t

8=t

t=8 hours

Alan arrives at 4 p.m.

400=60*t

400/60=t

6 4/6=t

t=6 4/6 hours

t=6 hours and 40 minutes

Beth arrives at 3:40 p.m.
