Let's define the following variables:
Daily earning goal (D): $112
Fixed daily earnings (F): $40
Commission per pair (C): $4.50
D-F = $112 - $40 = $72 (this is what he must make in commission per day to reach his goal)
To find out how many pairs of shoes he must sell per day: $72/$4.50 = 16
So the equation becomes:
(D - F)/C
or
($112 - $40)/$4.50
