First we set up a ratio of 100 quarts:5 hours since that is a given ratio.  Since hours was in the denominator of the ratio before, we place the 36 in the denominator of the other ratio, x quarts: 36 hours.

 

Setting them equal gives the following proportion:

 

100/5=x/36

 

Cross multiply to solve:

5x=3600

x=720

 

They can make 720 quarts in 36 hours.

 

For the second part, we use similar reasoning.  Remember 1 day = 24 hours.

 

100/5 = x/24

 

5x =2400

x=480

 

They can make 480 quarts per day.

You should calculate the number of quarts per hour and then multiply by 36 hours.

 

100 quarts = 5 hours

20 q = 1 hour

36*20q = 36 hours

720 q = 36 hours
