(8.5)(8.2) = (8.35 + 0.15)(8.35 - 0.15)

(8.5)(8.2) = 8.35² - 0.15²

Question: shall we ignore that dash (or did you intend one of the numbers in the multiplication to be negative)?

 

Really all you have to do is to multiply 8.5 times 8.2.

 

You can do this in your HEAD!  JUST DOUBLE THE FIRST NUMBER AND HALVE THE SECOND NUMBER.

 

So this product is the same as 17(4.1) = 17(4 + .1) = 17(4) + .1(17) = 68 + 1.7 = 69.7
