The volume of a cone is directly proportional to the volume of a cylinder of same base and height. The cylinder formula is Area * Height. The area of the base is a circle, so this gives us
V = (πr^2)(h)
Where r is the radius of the circle at the base, V is the volume, and h is the height.
Just as a pyramid fills one third the volume of a cube matching its dimensions, a cylinder fills one third of a cylinder volume. So to fine the volume of a cone, we just take the volume of the cylinder and multiply it by one-third.
V = (1/3)(πr^2)h
