problem of biostat

two drugs A and B are given below to two independs groups of 10 and 12 patients of hearts disease respectively. After 30 minutes the reduction of blood pressure due to two drugs are recorded are given below drug A : 7 16 14 9 10 11 6 8 9 10 . drug B : 10 12 16 14 11 12 13 8 12 15 9 12 . Which drugs show greater variation in reduction of blood pressure

The variance is the sum of squares: the square of each value in the dataset minus the mean of the dataset.

So calculate the mean of drug A.  Then take each individual value, subtract the mean, and square it (so the first number would be [7- mean(A)]^2; the second would be [16-mean(A)]^2).  Then add all of those together to get the variance of drug A.  Repeat this for drug B.

Sorry I forgot a step at the end.  You then need to take the average of all the sum of squares to get the variance.  So after you have calculated the sum of squares, divide it by the number of entries in the dataset (there are 10 in drug A, 12 in drug B).
