This is a polynomial.
 
4w-49w3 = w(4 - 49w2)
             = w(2 + 7w)(2 - 7w)

Dan, this is one of those patterns (this one called, "difference of squares") that you should memorize:
   (x2 - y2) = (x+y)(x-y)          [verify using F-O-I-L]
