Please help

a statistics professor plans classes so carefully that the lengths of her classes are uniformly between 47.0 and 57.0. Find the probability that a given class period runs between 50.25 and 51.0 minutes

Jason L.

A uniform distribution means there is an equal chance the class could end at each time in the interval between 47 and 57 minutes.  The formula for the probability is 1/(b-a) = 1/(57-47) = 1/10.  That means there is a 10% chance it could fall between an interval.

The sub-interval (50.25-51) makes up 3/4 of an interval.  So the probability of it falling in the sub-interval is (3/4) * (1/10) = 3/40 = 7.5%.
