  (a) If a parade 1 mi long is proceeding at 2 mph, how long will it take a runner jogging at 6 mph to travel from the front of the parade to the end of the parade?

  (b) If a parade 1 mi long is proceeding at 2 mph, how long will it take a runner jogging at 6 mph to travel from the end of the parade to the start of the parade?

(a)

The end of the parade and the runner are 1 mile apart.

2(t) + 6(t) = 1

8t = 1

t = 0.125

 

(b)

The front of the parade has a 1 mile head start.

parade: d = 2(t)

runner: d + 1 = 6t

2t = 6t - 1

-4t = -1

t = 0.25
