Word problem solving

Question

the voltage between two points in an electric circuit is 60v the contract point of a voltage divider is placed between these two points so that the voltage is divided into two parts one of these parts is twice the other.   These two voltages v1 and v2 can be found by solving the equation.   V1=2v2.     V1+v2=60

V1 = 2 V2

V1 + V2 = 60

 

Get V1 = 60 - V2 from bottom equation and plug this into top equation:

 

60 - V2 = 2 V2

 

60 =  3 V2

 

V2 = 20

 

Then V1 = 2(20) = 40

 

So V1 = 40 volts, V2 = 20 volts.
