evaluate expression

Question

please evaluate this expression, then put in scientic notation.

 

9.6 x 10^3

2.4 x 10^5

 

I have 4x10^-3 for the evaluation but don't know if it should be 4.0 x10^-4  since the exponent is a negative number.

 

Would the standard form then be either 0.0004   or .0004?

Hi,

 

Actually you're very close. The evaluation answer is 4*10^-2, which is standard form .04.  I always add the 0 in front, just in case your teacher doesn't see the decimal point, making it 0.04.
