First, a story has actors and actions. Separate the words.
Actors: Demon, Water, Paper, Bird, Weather, Road, Girl
Actions: Tasty, Violent, Fear, Change, Measure, Thirsty, Shook, Silent, Lonely
Then, a good story has a theme or a message -- choose one related to these actors and these actions
- a good beginning and a good ending is important; the middle is often just filler
- include emotion, not just information; things like surprise, suspense, and romance
- make it a story that is easy for someone to remember and retell
A good story has segments like Act I, Scene 1 ... make these distinct and interesting
Develop the character of the actors with each and every description or action. Character development is crucial.
Ex:
"The rustling leaves were louder than the bird singing as the girl took her usual stroll down the road that Halloween evening. She enjoyed the change in the weather, the colorful leaves, the cool breeze, and the clouds eerily crossing the bright moon overhead.
