A picture is 42 cm by 36 cm. A scale diagram of the picture must fit in a space that is 3 m by 2 m. write a reasonable scale for the scale diagram.

for the longer length of the original, 42 cm, to be made to fit in 3 m (300 cm), the scale factor would be 300/42 = 7.14, truncated.

 

The lesser of these scale factors must be chosen for the expansion to fit 3m by 2 m.  Answer: 5.55
