Let w = the width of the rug

Let w + 2 = the length of the rug

 

   Perimeter of rectangle is 2w + 2l

 

   2w + 2l = perimeter

   2w + 2(w + 2) = 36

   2w + 2w + 4 = 36

   4w + 4 = 36

   4w = 32

     w = 8  

 

   The width is 8 ft

   Since the length is 2 more than the width.  the length is 10 ft
