The two points and the lines which connect these form a triangle.

a²+b²=c²

(x-x₁)²+(y-y₁)²=c²

(5--3)²+(-2-8)²=c²

Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number.

(5+3)²+(-2-8)²=c²

(8)²+(-10)²=c²

64+100=c²

164=c²

√164=c

12.8=c
