How's this:  6% of x is 15             [where x=number of all 6th graders]

 

In word (story) problems, the word "of" usually means multiply and "is" means "=".

 

We may write 6% as 0.06 or 6/100 as needed in the problem.  Let's use 6/100:

    (6/100)x = 15

       x  = 15*(100/6)              [multiply both sides by (100/6)]

       x = 250

 

There are 250 students in the 6th grade.
