A labor union is when a lot of workers get together into a group so they have more power. For example, at a factory the workers might form a union, and then if the factory owner treats them badly or doesn't pay them enough, they can go on strike (they all walk off the job) to get the factory owner to negotiate. There can be unions of factory workers, or teachers, or nurses, etc.
Labor unions in the U.S. were stronger in the past (like the 1960s and 70s) but they are still around today. We especially have unions for teachers, policemen, nurses, and some other jobs. Some people say it would be good if we had more unions today. For example, Walmart does not let their workers unionize. If they could, they might be able to get higher wages.
