Finding the lateral surface area

In Algebra I am given the following problem:

 

Draw a right circular cylinder of radius 5 in. and height 10 in., and find the lateral surface area.

 

I don't know the difference between surface area and lateral surface area. Please help me.

Lateral area is the area only of the face - think the label on a can.

Surface area is the area of the face and the two bases.

 

Lateral area = circumference x height

LA = 2π(5)(10)

LA = 100π

 

The lateral area is 100π in²
