percent problem with diagram

In algebra I am asked the following question:

 

90 is what percent of 150? Draw diagram.

 

What is the answer to this question? I know you cannot draw a diagram for me to see, but could you describe it? Thank you.

From the diagram, it looks like 90 is 60% of 150, let's see:

    90 is what% of 150

    90 is x% of 150                    [let x=the percent we want to find]

    90 is (x/100)*150        ["of" usually means multiply; "percent" means per 100]

    90 = (x/100)*150        ["is" means "="]

     90*(100/150) = x      [you could cancel first, but let's multiply both sides by (100/150)]

     60 = x                     [now, you can cancel like mad]

 

     90 is x% of 150      [from above]

     90 is 60% of 150      [cool!]
