Observe that one third of 3.6 miles is 1.2 miles, in 10 minutes.  Just multiply this by 4, getting 4.8 miles in 40 minutes.

 

It can be set up as a proportion: 3.6 mi / 30 min = 4.8 mi / x minutes.  Same answer will be obtained.
