Two rooms in a house are similar
rectangles. Room A is 12 ft by 16 ft. "e
longer side of Room B is 4 ft shorter than
twice the length of the shorter side of
Room A. What are the dimensions of the
second Room B?

Let x = shorter side

Let 2x-4 = longer side

 

The ratio between the two sides of rectangle B must be the same as that of rectangle A since they are similar. We set up an equation based on this ratio 12/16 (which equals 3/4).

 

x/(2x-4) = 3/4

 

Cross multiply

 

6x-12 = 4x

 

2x = 12

 

x = 6

 

The shorter side of Room B would be 6 feet & the longer side would be 2(6)-4 = 8 feet.
