Grew up in Brazil
Not at all! The famous street carnival of Rio de Janeiro is transmitted live worldwide but in only happens in Rio. It is a big part of Brazilian culture although most Brazilians only watch it on their TV. In the northern states there are carnival street celebrations that may involve music cars with live bands (Salvador, Bahia) or giant dolls (Recife, Pernambuco). In the cold and rainy south, Brazilians enjoy carnival mostly at private club parties where they hold costume balls.
