Why is a 99% confidence interval wider than a 95% confidence interval?

A 99% confidence interval is wider than a 95% confidence. If I had a 95% confidence interval, that would mean that I am 95% certain in the interval. But with a 99% confidence interval I would be wrong one time out of a hundred, therefore the interval would be wider.

You are not incorrect but remember that to be MORE confident (using the same data) that your true population mean is in the interval you calculate the interval must get wider (bigger).
