To provide an example, what would prompt the question (x+4)(x-5)=?

Lets say you have a situation in which you throw a projectile into the air from the certain height.  You want to know when the ball hits the ground. 

 

(x + 4)(x - 5)

 

 

Setting this expression equal to zero will tell you the time the projectile hits the ground.
