Your goal is to get 'y' on a side by itself.
The first step is to move all the numbers that don't have 'y' in them to one side.
  • subtract 1/2 from both sides
y/4+1/2-1/2=3/2-1/2
y/4+0=2/2
y/4=1
The second step is to make one side equal to exactly 'y'.
  • multiply both sides by 4
4(y/4)=4(1)
4y/4=4
y=4
