Mary draw an 8 cm by 6cm rectangle on her grid paper. She shades a square with a side length of 4cm inside her rectangle. What area of the rectangle is left unshaped?

We need to calculate the area of the original drawing and the area of the square drawn.  The difference between the 2 is the area of the unshaded region.

 

For the rectangle

A = LW = (8)(6) = 48 cm²

 

For the square shaded inside

A = LW = (4)(4) = 16 cm²

 

For the unshaded region

48 - 16 = 32 cm²
