If I understood your question correctly, that it takes an hour to go to work and get back home, then it takes 5/9 hour to go to work = 5/9 * 60 ≈ 33 minutes. and it takes 4/9 hour to get back home = 4/9 * 60 ≈ 27 minutes and the distance between home and work = 40 * 5/9 = 50 * ( 1 - 5/9) = 50 * 4/9 = 200/9 ≈ 22 miles.
You need to use the equation that relates distance to speed and time, that is Distance = Speed * time
and since you have same distance from home to work and work to home then you can equal the first distance, home to work, to the second distance, work to home, and solve for time, assume it is x going to work and 1-x coming back home,
40x = 50(1-x)
40x=50-50x
90x=50
x=5/9
now, using known time you can find the distance using the previous equation relating distance speed and time as I showed earlier.
