Dear Trinity,
An equation is nothing more than a mathematical statement of how one variable (the independent variable, usually called "x") is related to the dependent variable, usually denoted "y." For example
y = x - 5 is a linear equation. It tells you that, whatever the value of x might be, y will be five less than that number.
If x = 0, for example, then y = -5
If x = 5, for example, then y = 0
If x = 10, for example, then y = 5
Most situations that you are likely to encounter will involve linear equations. The variable y could represent the amount of gross profit (or net profit) a business earns by selling a certain number, x, of a certain product.
I hope this helps a little.
