Angle sizes between a clocks hands.

My sons Year 7 Question: An analogue clock has an hour hand and a minute hand. At 12 o'clock the is 0 degrees between the two hands. If the angle of the two hands is measured in a clockwise direction starting from the hour hand, what is the size of the angle between the hour and minute hands at 9pm?

I'm asking to see why 270 degrees was marked wrong.

Hi Mark,
At 9pm the hour hand is the big hand at 12, the small hand points to 9. I'm sorry, but I disagree with your answer or reasoning.

On most clocks the "big hand" is the short but wide hand which is the hour hand. You may be confusing the "long" hand with the "big" hand. The longer hand is the minute hand and is usually thinner than the "big" hand. The correct answer really is 90 degrees!

If, as you say, we move clockwise from 12 to 9, an angle of 270° is created.
An angle of 90° would be between 12 and 9 in a counterclockwise direction.
