A container filled with water has a length 11cm and width 7cm. When a rock is placed in the container the water level rises by 3cm. What is the depth of the container?

Original volume = 7(11)h = 77h, cm³

 

After rock is dumped in, new volume = 7(11)(h+3) =original volume + volume of rock.

 

77h + 3(77) = original volume + volume of rock, or 77h + 3(77) = 77h + volume of rock.

So the volume of the rock must be 3(77).

 

No information about the container's height can be gleaned.
