One way of doing this, there are probably others

 

Fill 5-qt container. 

 

Dump 3 quarts out from the 5-qt. container into the 3-qt container, leaving 2 quarts in the 5-qt. 

 

Empty the 3-qt. container. 

 

Pour the 2 quarts from the 5-qt. into the the 3qt.

 

Fill the 5-qt. container again. 

 

Pour into the 3-qt. until it is full (1 quart), leaving 4 quarts in the 5-qt. container.
