(3/[x-2])=(4/x)-(5/x)

(3/[x-2])=(-1/x)

cross multiply

3*x=-1*(x-2)

3x=-x+2

3x+x=2

4x=2

x=2/4

x=1/2

(keep in mind that you have an equation, you are solving for x, and the denominators cannot be equal to 0)

(that said, 2 and 0 can't be solutions but we got 1/2 anyway !!)

You MUST parenthesize your denominators when they're anything other than just one number or one variable.

 

On this problem, you must get a common denominator, making any adjustments so that each quantity can use the LCD.

 

In this way you may combine the two quantities on the left side of the equation.  If you then adjust the right side so that it has the same LCD as the left side, then all you have to do is set the numerators (Left & Right) equal.

 

Strictly speaking, it's also necessary to state the restrictions that come from prevention of any denominator being zero; in this case, x ≠0, x≠2 must be noted (permanently because the original problem is not defined in either such case).
