cos 0 = 1 so arctan 1 means "what angle has its tangent function valued at 1? Answer is 45 degrees, or better yet, pi/4.

By now (at this point in a Trig course), you should know cosine and sine of many special angles.

You might have a lot of trouble in Calculus if you're not on top of Trigonometry.
I am curious about the Advisement that led you into that situation.
