Mrs Lopez spends 9/12 of her paycheck on groceries and bills.  She deposits the rest of the money equally into three accounts. What fraction of her paycheck did she deposit in each account?

Jacinda, 1/4 was the total amount left but the way I read this problem, Mrs Lopez split  the 3/12 (or 1/4 of the remaining money) among 3 accounts.  How much did Mrs. Lopez put in the following accounts?  Hint:  It will be simpler to solve this with the 3/12 than the 1/4.  

 

Account 1  How much of 3/12?

 

Account 2  How much of 3/12?

 

Account 3  How much of 3/12?

 

You reduced the fraction 3/12 to 1/4 accurately though.  :)

Jacinda, I bet you can figure this out on your own. Draw a big circle and divide it into 12 parts. Fill in 9 of them for what she spends, and you'll be able to find your answer!
