You could write an entire paper or even a book on this subject. It is pretty broad, but basically, this law was established to provide for the privacy and security of electronically transmitted health information for the purpose of providing quality care. Physicians can obtain information they need to diagnose and treat patients. Patients benefit because the information providers need to properly care of for them is easily obtained, and is kept confidential. The healthcare industry in general benefits because different entities can share information to provide quality care and serve their patients better.
