First make two equations for the word problem as above. Then solve second equation by plugging in the first one for "X" as so....
5 (Y - 6) = 6Y + 8
5Y - 30 = 6Y = 8
5Y - 6Y = 8 + 30
-Y = 38
Y = - 38
Now plug this answer for "Y" into first equation to find "X"
Y - 6 = X
-38 - 6 = X
X = -44
