There is myth that practice makes perfect. Actually... perfect practice makes perfect. The idea of practicing writing words with the intention of improving handwriting or spelling ONLY works if you copy from a model before you start independent practice. When teaching handwriting I have students trace a grey lined (not broken) "perfect" sample, then write their own. Then trace a model again and write their own. We do this several times, each time stopping to compare their independent practice to the model, verbally assessing how the two compare. No erasing is done, we are simply trying to get closer and closer to the model. When the independent practice produces something approximating the model, only then is the model removed. It could be 5 times or 20, just depends on the student and the complexity of the model.
