Just about everything in the western world's rapid material development (water systems, sewage systems, electrical grid, roads, bridges, electronics, automobiles, airplanes, internet, etc.) are the result of the wedding of industry and science.
In societies where medieval mentality (e.g. controlling theocracies) prevails, and science is denigrated, these benefits are inhibited or resented.
It is said that the U.S. penchant for individualism nurtures the inventor and creator more than any repressive society, so progress is encouraged thereby, even if often by a renegade who often is resisted by the establishment. Historically, the U.S. has benefitted greatly by immigration of geniuses who were stifled in their old world societies, where class mattered and authority dominated opportunity.
