Equation 1: x + y = 2
Equation 2: 6x + y = 2
Multiply Equation 1 by negative one:
-1 (x + y) = 2 (-1)
New Equation 1: - x - y = -2
Line up Equation 1 and Equation 2 and add them to solve for x:
-x - y = -2
+
6x + y = 2
_________
-1x + 6x = 5
-y + y = 0 which cancels out
-2 + 2 = 0
now you have 5x = 0
x = 0
Now plug in x = 0 into Equation 1 or 2 to solve for y.
Let's take Equation 2: 6 (0) + y = 2
0 + y = 2
y = 2
