The perimeter of a rectangle is 28cm. The length of the rectangle is 2cm More than twice the width. Find the deminsions of the rectangle.

The story problem mentioned the rectangle's perimeter:   p=28.  The formula for perimeter of a rectangle is as

follows:   P=2(L)+ 2W. 

             

              P=2L +2W           

              P=28

              Use substitution:  28=2L+2W .

                        

                            28=2(2W+2) +2W        Simplify by using the distributive property.

                 

                            28=4W + 4 + 2W          Add like terms together.

 

                              28=6W + 4                  Solve for "W" by subtracting 4 from both sides of equation.

                              24= 6W                       Divide both sides of equation by number next to "W."

                              4=W                           To find the length, substitute 4=W back into the

                                                                equation 28=2L +2W.

You can check your work by substituting both "L" and "W" values back into the original

equation, 28=2L +2W.
