Ratio Word Problem

Question

The ratio of females to males in the computer club is 6 to 5. if 4 females and 6 males miss a meeting, the ratio is 10 to 7. how many students are in the computer club?  How do you solve this? Thanks!

Let F be number of female students and M number of male studens

 

F /M   =   6/5       

F = (6/5) M

 

(F-4)/(M-6) = 10/7

7(F-4) = 10(M-6)

7F - 28 = 10M - 60

7F = 10M -32  Plug the value of F from the first equation into this equation

 

7(6/5)M = 10M -32

42 M = 50 M -160

160 = 8M              M=20,  F=(6/5)M =24

 

Total number of students in the computer club is 20 +24 = 44
