Jack and jill went up the hill. Jack fetched 2 pails of water and jill fetched 8. Jack fetched 24 fewer pails than jill over the week. so how many pails did jack fetch

When Jack did 2 pails, Jill did 8 so writing them in ratio proportion stuff, we say:

 

 

  Jack    :    Jill

   

    2       :     8     (Ratio)

 

2 times x : 8 times x    (Actual)

 

Difference of Jack and Jill be 24 so subtracting actual we write an equation:

 

    8x - 2x   = 24

       6x       =  24

        x        =   24/6

        x = 4

 

If Jack  =  2 times x = 2 times 4 = 8

 

and Jill = 8 times x = 8 times 4  = 32 

 

then 32  -  8  = 24 pails

Oh you are not ratio Proportion guy? NOt a problem. Thats just a week story and there is easier explanation.

 

   Day                     Jill                           Jack                      Difference in pails

   Day 1                   8                             2                               8-2 = 6

   Day 2                   8+ 8 = 16                2 + 2 = 4                   16 - 4 = 12                  

   Day 3                   8+ 8 + 8 = 24          2 + 2 +2 = 6              24 - 6 = 18     (still difference is not 24)

   Day 4                   8+ 8 + 8 +8 = 32     2 + 2 +2 +2 = 8         32 - 8 = 24      (Got it ! difference is 24)

 

So Jill fetch 32 pails and Jack fetch 8 pails !

Hi Kurt,

 

The first part of the problem lets you know that Jill fetches 4 times as much water as jack.  Jack seems to be a little lazy.

The second part of the problem lets you know that Jill's pails minus Jack's pails equals 24.

 

So Jill = 4 X Jack

 

Jill - Jack = 24 or Jill = Jack + 24

 

Subtract the second equation from the first equation--> 0 = 3Jack - 24

 

3Jack = 24

 

Jack = 8 pails.

 

So Jill fetched 32 pails

 

And for all his trouble, Jack broke his head on the way down the hill.
