Question

The distance from Phoenix to Los Angeles is 400 miles. A car traveled this distance in 6 hours and 40 minutes.


What was the average speed of the car in miles per hour?

I know I need to divide 400 miles by the time but how do I put 6 hrs and 40 mins???

Good question.

 

Since there are 50 minutes in an hour, the 40 minutes is 2/3 of an hour, or .67.

 

So 6 hours 40 minutes is 6.67 hours
