If x is the amount of money Otto originally had and $48 is 3/4 of that original amount, set up the equation as follows
¾*x = 48 and solve for x.
Multiply both side by 4/3 to get x = 4/3*(48) = (4*48)/3 = 64
Otto had $64 before he bought the video game.

Hi William . I did the math a different way . If used in similar problems would the way I did it always be correct or is this a lucky case where it happened to work out. Please let me know I would love to get your opinion on this topic. Thanks

There is only one correct answer but many ways to derive it, including yours. I just used a more explicit approach, basically working through each step, because I thought it would be clearer to see.
