Need some help.. utterly stumped

2x+y=3

-2x + 5y =-9

 

 

 

Im utterly stumped

2x+y=3

-2x+5y=-9

add the two equations

the 2x and the -2x will cancel (-2x+2x=0)

y+5y=6y

3+(-9)=-6

6y=-6

y=-6/6

y=-1

substitute

2x+(-1)=3

2x=3+1

2x=4

x=4/2

x=2

answer: (2,-1)
