$80 is to be divided between Alex and David in the ratio 5:11. How much does each get?

Another way to look at this with dividing $80 into a ratio of 5:11

That means the total is being divided into 5+11 = 16 parts

 

Alex gets (5/16)(80) = $25

David gets (11/16)(80) = $55

Since the amounts that Alex and David get are in the ratio 5:11, Alex gets 5x and David gets 11x.  

 

So, 5x+11x = 80

 

           16x = 80

 

              x = 5

 

Alex gets 5x = $25

David gets 11x = $55
