Quadratic formula:
x = (-b ± √(b2 - 4ac)) / 2a
Substituting:
a = 4
b = 40
c = 3
x = (-40 ± √(402 - (4 * 4 * 3)) / (2 * 4)
x = (-40 ± √(1600 - 48)) / 8
x = (-40 ± √1552) / 8
x = (-40 ± 39.4 [rounded] ) / 8
x = (-40 - 39.4) / 8
x = -9.9 [rounded]
or
x = (-40 + 39.4) / 8
x = -.08 [rounded]
Solution:
x = -9.9 [rounded] or x = -.08 [rounded].
