Because no one should have to say, "I was never any good at math."

Breanna, Sherry S. has given you a good starting point, and I hope I can help because even though geography is not one of my subject areas, I've lived nearly my entire life in Upstate N.Y. and have been all around my state. New York State has three main mountainous (high) regions: the Adirondack Mountains, the Catskill Mountains and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains which rise in what's known as the Southern Tier. A large part of the rest of the state could be described as being of medium elevation or on a plateau as Sherry mentioned, though areas immediately adjacent to the two Great Lakes that touch N.Y. State, namely Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, are of relatively low elevation. And then areas around New York City and Long Island, being as they are very close to the Atlantic Ocean, are also mostly at or near sea level (lowlands), though higher elevations begin almost immediately north of New York City proper.
